The f(x) = e^x | Sustainable AI and putting yourself in an NBA game

Good Day! This is my weekly newsletter, with a dose of insights into the future. The topic of this newsletter is the exponential times we live in, hence the title of f(x) = e^x, which is the (natural) exponential function.

Building a Greener Future: The Importance of Sustainable AI

My latest article:

Sustainable AI is crucial as AI technology grows and transforms industries. AI infrastructure consumes significant power and resources, and the carbon footprint of AI is equivalent to the airline industry's emissions.

However, AI can also enhance sustainability by identifying environmental threats and reducing waste. Green energy is being used to power AI infrastructure, and AI is being deployed in a wide range of applications to support sustainable development, such as monitoring deforestation activities, detecting illegal fishing, optimising agricultural practices, and improving energy efficiency.

Developing AI systems that prioritise environmental sustainability, social responsibility, and ethical considerations is important. By embracing sustainable AI practices, we can maximise the potential of this technology to support sustainable development and create a more equitable and sustainable future for all.

Useful Nuggets of Information

My weekly tips from around the web to get you thinking.

1. Only half of employees trust AI at work.

According to a survey of over 17,000 people from 17 countries. Nearly 50% of employees are wary of relying on AI decisions and recommendations, sharing information with AI tools, and AI monitoring. The majority believe humans should retain more control than AI systems in decision-making. (The Conversation)

2. AI is changing the field of mathematics.

As chatbots become more ubiquitous, mathematicians are exploring how AI can assist with their work beyond mere calculation. One of the questions being explored by mathematicians and computer scientists is whether machines will change math. (Nature)

3. One small qubit for man, one giant leap for mankind.

Google has achieved a milestone in quantum computing by demonstrating the possibility of reducing errors by increasing the number of qubits. They hope to reduce error rates to enable useful quantum algorithms by treating a group of qubits as one logical qubit. (Gizmodo)

4. A black hole as a massive quantum computer.

What if we haven't found extra-terrestrial life because we're looking for the wrong technosignatures? A recent study suggests that advanced civilisations might use microscopic black holes as the ultimate source of computation. (Universe Today)
